Helgerson, a senior heavyweight, placed fifth at the Midlands Championships, wrestling primarily against NCAA Division I competition. The only NCAA Division III wrestler in the bracket, Helgerson went 5-2 overall, including 4-1 against rated D-I wrestlers. He opened the tournament with wins over No. 10 Tucker Lane of Nebraska (4-3) and Kyle Simonson of Iowa State (3-1) before being knocked into the consolation bracket with a 6-2 loss to fourth-rated Ryan Flores of American University in the quarterfinals. In the wrestlebacks, Helgerson topped Matt Gibson of Iowa State (4-3), and No. 16 Christian Brantley of UNI (3-1) before being edged in overtime by second-ranked Ryan Tomei of Pitt (5-3; SV1). He closed out the tournament by topping third-ranked D.J. Russo of Rutgers, 6-4, for fifth place. (IIAC Male Athlete of the Week)
