McDermott is the first Coe College men’s basketball student-athlete to garner Defensive Player of the Year accolades since the league's inception of honoring a Most Valuable Player and Defensive Player of the Year in 2010-11. In this his senior season for the Kohawks, McDermott totaled 80 rebounds for an average of 5.0 per game while adding 0.8 steals per game. Offensively he put up 13.4 points per game while averaging 1.9 three-point field goals per game and 2.3 assists.
Additionally, McDermott was selected first-team all-conference, as the defensive player of the year is not honored as all-conference unless selected to the first or second team by the coaches. This is the second all-conference honor for McDermott, adding to his second-team selection a season ago.
