Schupbach, a senior, and Tai Lucero finished second at the 2012 USTA/ITA Midwest Region Championships in St. Peter, Minn. The top-seeded tandem in the draw, Schupbach and Lucero shut out Carroll (Wis.)’s Sarah Wick and Amanda Weckop in their Round of 32 match and beat Luther’s Elise Allen and Maggie Helms, 8-3, in the Round of 16 before surviving Wisconsin-Whitewater’s Megan Kasten and Jackie Vitale, 9-8 (3), in the quarterfinals. Despite the scare, the duo advanced to the final with an 8-3 victory over Wisconsin-Eau Claire’s Taylor Heltne and Katie Gillman, the No. 3 seed in the draw.
The run came to an end in the final, though, as Carleton’s Bridget Doyle and Mikayla Becich posted a 6-2, 7-5 victory to earn the doubles crown.
Schupbach – the top seed in the singles draw – was cut down in the second round, 3-6, 7-5, 7-6 (2) by Grinnell’s Shirlene Luk.
