Whipple, a sophomore, won the Iowa Conference decathlon with an NCAA provisional qualifying score of 6186 points. He recorded the highest mark among the 12 competitors in the 400-meter dash (50.08 seconds) and the 110-meter hurdles (15.71 seconds). His marks in the long jump (20-6.25), pole vault (12-1.25) and 1500-meter run (4:37.20) were the second best in the competition. Whipple’s other marks include 11.51 seconds in the 100-meter dash, 32-3.75 in the shot put, 5-9.25 in the high jump, 107-5 in the discus and 120-0 in the javelin.
