Murphy was named the male Most Valuable Performer at the First Annual IIAC Indoor Track and Field Championship held on February 28 and March 1 at Buena Vista University after winning three events at the Championship. Murphy won the 3,000-meters by 10.32 seconds, finishing in 8:38.08. He won the 5,000-meters in 14:51.72, 3.57 seconds ahead of second place. His third victory was in the 1,500-meters which he won by less than one second in a time of 4:00.86.
